Raw Material Selection
The first step involves selecting the appropriate raw material, typically coconut shells, coal, or wood, which are rich in carbon content. The choice of material impacts the final properties of the activated carbon.
Carbonization
Raw materials are heated to temperatures between 400-800°C in a controlled, oxygen-free environment. This process removes volatile compounds and transforms the raw material into a carbon-rich substance known as "char."
Activation
The char is then subjected to high temperatures (800-1100°C) with steam or gas. This "activation" process opens up the material's pores, significantly increasing its surface area and improving its adsorption capabilities for purifying gases and liquids.
Washing and Cooling
Once activated, the carbon is cooled and washed to remove any residual impurities such as ash, salts, or chemicals. This ensures that the final product is pure and free from unwanted substances that might interfere with its effectiveness.
Drying
The washed activated carbon is carefully dried to eliminate excess moisture. Proper drying ensures stability, preventing clumping and maintaining the material's high adsorption capacity.
Sieving and Packaging
This process involves the precise sieving of cubic activated carbon to ensure uniform particle size distribution, followed by efficient packaging to preserve its adsorption properties. Proper sieving and packaging are crucial for maintaining the carbon's effectiveness in various industrial applications, such as air and water purification.

Commercial activated carbon grades have an internal surface area of 500 up to 1500 m2/g. Related to the type of application, three major product groups exist:
- Powdered activated carbon; particle size 1-150 μm
- Granular activated carbon, particle size 0.5-4 mm
- Extruded activated carbon, partilce size 0.8-4 mm
